Stephen Dixon, RIP

It is with great sadness that we report that Stephen Dixon, former CoderDojo Bray Champion, passed away on Saturday 16th September, following a short illness.  Stephen was a tireless champion and a driving force behind the Bray CoderDojo. He gave a huge amount of his time and effort over many years, as both a trustee following the Dojo's successful application for  charity status , and as a mentor to the children. His knowledge and enthusiasm shone through. He developed the  Dojo Sushi sheets , in his own time, which continue to be a valuable resource for the dojo. Stephen reached out and established valuable connections in the local community, expanded the role of Dojo  volunteers , and liaised with the wider Dojo and  Raspberry Foundation  communities. Such links and the groundwork he laid has helped the Dojo become an established community service and a huge asset to children in the area. He will be sorely missed. 😔 On behalf of the Bray Coder Dojo...

Annual General Meeting (AGM): The future of the Dojo is in your hands!

Annual General Meeting (AGM)   The future of the Dojo is in your hands! 7th January 2023 at 14:30, Presentation College Bray Due to Covid-19, CoderDojo Bray has been unable to convene its sessions since March 2020. In the intervening two and a half years, the Board of the dojo has maintained its charity status, funding efforts and insurance, and our links with the Raspberry Pi foundation, with the intention of resuming our free weekly Saturday sessions in Presentation College Bray during the school year. All Board members and mentors are volunteers, and have given their time for a number of years. The dojo has been in operation since 2014 and has provided a range of opportunities for young people in the Bray area to learn a variety of coding approaches and systems, from beginners to robotics, in a fun and friendly environment. Before we closed in early 2020, our numbers of young people attending on a weekly basis were in the high 30's. Unfortunately, it has taken longer than we had...

Update on the reopening of CoderDojo Bray

Hello everyone, We're still here, and can't wait to restart the coding sessions! However, in light of the current situation and the spread of Covid-19, after much consideration, in order to ensure a safe environment for the students and the volunteers, we have decided it's best to postpone the commencement of this season's Dojo until a later date . Please monitor our website , Twitter and the mailing list. We will be posting / sending further communications as the situation continues to develop, once we finalise the plans to go back to the Dojo, hopefully soon.  Don't forget that your children can still access many learning facilities available online and continue their coding journey, some are listed below. You can also get all the sushi sheets we use in the Dojo in the Coding Streams page of our website. Scratch online (and ScratchJR for the youngest coders). Check the Ideas section for tutorials AppInventor . Check the Resources section for tutorials. HTML...

IoT students visit to Killruddery House

This post has been written by the CoderDojo students A few weeks ago, the CoderDojo Bray IoT group went to  Killruddery House  to check the network and security cameras. There were 4 kids (Megan, Tyler, Joshua and me, Marcos) and two mentors (Kevin & Tatjana). At Killruddery we first went to Anthony's office to check the power source; everything was powered by Linux. Anthony had built the source code himself. After we checked all that, we went up to the roof, it was fun! On the way up, we climbed three flights of stairs and through a dusty attic. Going to Killruddery was a great experience! My name is Joshua. I thought the visit to Kilruddery was fun, cool and kind of interesting. We started off looking at the pigs. They loved being scratched behind the ear. Then we went through a huge door and into this room that had a map on the wall, in fact there were maps on every wall in the house. We made our way into his office where he showed us about this computer (it was hu...

[UPDATE 12 March 2020] CoderDojo is closed for the season.  See this page for details --- Originally posted on: 29 February 2020 As you know, CoderDojo Bray takes place in Presentation College.  You may have read in the papers or in social media that some students from Presentation College Bray have been recently on a sky trip to an area in Italy which has subsequently been included in the Coronavirus (COVID-19) affected area (the whole province of Lombardy is now being outlined as a precaution as part of the protocol). We are in contact with the school Principal. The advice we have been given by the school, following recommendations from the HSE, is as follows: * There has been NO confirmed case of coronavirus in Ireland * There are NO confirmed cases of Coronavirus in the school community * There is no need to close the school * Only students who were on the trip AND are unwell should stay out of school As such and until further notice, the CoderDojo session...
